EVALUATION Q4 - HOW DID YOU USE MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION, RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES?
How did you use media technologies in the construction, research planning and evaluation stages?
ÒHARDWARE – SONY HXR-MC2000E – SOLID STATE CAMERA, INBUILT HARD DRIVE, USB DEVICE – DELL XPS MACHINES I7 PROCESSERS
ÒSOFTWARE - WINDOWS 7 – PREMIERE PRO CS5 – ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS5 – MOZILLA FIREFOX – BLOGGER – YOUTUBE – MICROSOFT POWERPOINT
Research and Planning
I searched google to find the codes and conventions of documentaries, then wrote a text document detailing the codes and conventions of documentaries giving me a better idea of how I would construct it. I used the colleges high end dell computers through this whole process. I used the Blogger website to display and share my work with the group. I also used used the website ‘Top documentary films’ to watch more documentaries and build the codes and conventions, linking them with examples. YouTube helped me to display the finished audio and video work by embedding the links on blogger.
Construction

We used Sony HXR – MC 2000 E solid state cameras with inbuilt hard drives to filn the interviews and A-roll footage (including still images). The camera features exellent sound recording so we used them to capture the radio trailer and the audience feedback too. USB cables were used to put the clips we'd filmed onto the college computers and memory sticks used to transport any other work to college. I used a 8GB SD card to carry all my work, which was sufficient. We abtained archive footage of the celebrities we featured through youtube and google images.
To edit the clips we used a software program called adobe Premier Pro CS5, which was difficult to use at first but after a few basic tutorials from our teacher and the internet we managed to start using professional techniques and create the final media products. We also usedAdobe Photoshop CS5 to edit the stills images we were featuring (mainly the ones of Rihanna and Chris Brown which were used for visuals during the interveiws).
EvaluationTo complete my evaluation I used the websites google, Blogger, Youtube and Microsoft Powerpoint for question 2 which is posted on slideshare. Blogger was the most useful rescource as it allowed me to look over all my work from the project and remind myself of what to write about.

EVALUATION Q3 - WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
The following was my audience feedback:
We managed to get two people to give audio respones to our documentary. We chose to record a parent and a teenager, as these are the types of people featured within the documentary and also the target audience.
This feedback is from Clio, the parent (age 30), who seemed to enjoy the documentary
This is the 2nd audio feedback from Ellie, aged 16
This Is what I learned from these responses;
The content of the documentary was interesting and varied, making it a good watch. I gathered there could have been more done to improve the presentation of that content, as neither of the responses praised the visual style of the documentary or the technical achievements. However the overall impression is good and I would be happy to show the documentary as a illustration of my skills.
STORYBOARD - OPENING SEQUENCE
Storyboard - Opening sequence

We have created a draft storyboard for the opening sequence of our documentary this includes an opening title of somebody actually writing the title onto a piece of paper and then leading on to a very short montage of the interviewees stating their celebrity role model, we think this is a good opening sequence as it shows the audience what the documentary is about.

SCRIPTING VOICEOVER
Script Voiceover
This is our original (very) rough draft of our script for the voice over. We improved this over time as the documentary progressed. We originally recorded our voice over on an Iphone due to technical problems with the camera. So the sound quality wasn't great, however when we recorded it we were able to make some good adjustments to improve our documentary.
Here is the new voice over script:
Introduction: Why are children, teenagers and young adults so obsessed with celebrities and why do they look up to them as Role models?
Role model definition to inform audience: The term role model is defined as an individual who is looked up to by someone else. A role model is someone other individuals aspire to be like.
Introduction to Chris: Rihanna was just 16 when she was signed to DefJam since then, she has achieved phenomenal success.
Holly introduction: 17 year old Holly wants to live the glamorous life, just like her role model. From her car to her wardrobe, Holly is well on her way.
Jen introduction: As a mother, Jen sees how young people are influenced by Celebrities even if they behave poorly.
Kate moss scandal information: In 2005, the daily mirror ran front page and inside photos that seemed to show Kate moss snorting several lines of a white powder that was presumed to be cocaine at a Babyshambles recording session.
End of part one summery: of course not all celebrities are poor role models, many are talented, hard working and honest who support good causes across the globe.
CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF RADIO TRAILERS
Codes and Conventions of Radio Trailers
- short clips of the voices from the interviewee's regarding the subject of the documentary, primarily sharing their views and/or opinions.
- the narrator from the documentary talking a little bit about what the documentary is mainly about.
- the narrator sometimes asking rhetorical questions about the subject.
- music that is either used within the documentary to act as a 'theme tune'- when people hear it they will link the two media products (the documentary and the radio trailer) or music that relates to the subject of the documentary.
- the narrator stating the title, the tagline and the date and time at the end of the documentary so people know what it is, when it is and the time its on.
EDIT DECISION LIST
Edit Decision List
Here are all the images of the final clips we decided to use for editing, we used the majority of these clips to change volume, change backgrounds, add images/videos to the blue screen interviews, added the voice-over in the correct parts, organise the clips into order, cut down the clips and add name tags. all of this was done through Premiere Pro CS5 Adobe.
RECORDING AND EDITING RADIO TRAILER
After listening to a few different radio trailer adverts we can clearly see the conventions within them... these are:
- short clips of the voices from the interviewee's regarding the subject of the documentary, primarily sharing their views and/or opinions.
- the narrator from the documentary talking a little bit about what the documentary is mainly about.
- the narrator sometimes asking rhetorical questions about the subject.

EDITING
Editing
Our title was handwritten, We sped the film up to make it look interesting
We filmed Gemma using a blue screen, and added the Chroma Key and blended out the blue colour, We then added some B-roll footage that we filmed of magazines.
We put images of our interviewee over one another, to emphasis to the audience her glamorous lifestyle.
We added this photo of SJP to show how our roll model wanted to be like her, as on the image she looks glamorous
This shot shows the transition 'cross fade' I put the effect inbetween both images of Kate Moss

TYPES OF DOCUMENTARY
Types of Documentary
Poetic documentaries
-First appeared in the 1920’s
-The poetic mode moved away from continuity editing and instead organized images
-The documentaries were fragmentary, impressionistic, lyrical.
-They contain a cinematic narrative.
Expository documentaries
-They speak directly to the viewer, often in the form of an authoritative commentary.
-This type of documentary proposes a strong argument and point of view.
-They are rhetorical, and try to persuade the viewer. (They may use a rich and sonorous male voice.)
-The (voice-of-God) commentary often sounds ‘objective’ and omniscient.
-Mainly based on past events
Observational documentaries
-Attempt to simply and spontaneously observe life with a minimum of intervention.
-The first observational docs date back to the 1960’s.
-Usually includes a voice-over commentary.
-It sometimes contains re-enactments/reconstructions.
Participatory documentaries
-The presenter takes part in the documentary.
-Not only is the filmmaker part of the film, we also get a sense of how situations in the film are affected or altered by her presence.
-The encounter between presenter and subject becomes a critical element of the film.
Reflexive documentaries
-They draw attention to the fact that they are representations.
-This question is central to this sub-genre of films. They prompt us to “question the authenticity of documentary in general.”
-It is highly skeptical of ‘realism.
Performative documentaries
-stress subjective experience and emotional response to the world.
-They are strongly personal, unconventional, perhaps poetic and/or experimental, and might include hypothetical enactments of events designed to make us experience what it might be like for us to possess a certain specific perspective on the world that is not our own.
